
The Rt. Hon. Kwasi Kwarteng, MP, has been appointed as Britain’s first black Finance Minister, also known as the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer.
The office of Britain’s new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, announced the new role of the British-born Ghanaian today, September 6, 2022.
Rt. Hon. Kwarteng was the Secretary of State at the Department of Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy until this new appointment, having previously served as Minister of State in the same Department.
From 16 November 2018 to 24 July 2019, Kwasi served as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department for Exiting the European Union.
Kwasi studied classics and history at Trinity College in Cambridge before going on to Harvard University on a Kennedy Scholarship.

In 2000, he received a PhD in economic history from the University of Cambridge. Kwasi worked as a financial analyst before becoming a Member of Parliament. Kwasi was elected as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Spelthorne in 2010. He served on the Transport Select Committee from 2010 to 2013, and then the Work and Pensions Select Committee, where he served until 2015.
Kwasi joined the Public Accounts Committee in October 2016, and remained a member until May 2017. Kwasi was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Leader of the House of Lords in 2015, and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer in 2017. Kwasi Kwarteng was at HM Treasury following his new position.
He met with senior officials in the department and discussed urgent energy bill assistance, with an announcement expected this week.
